Houston Community College (HCC) cybersecurity students placed in the top 10 percent of competitors at the spring National Cyber League competition against 7,800 students from 450 universities and colleges across the U.S. The HCC student team placed in the top 10 percent of finishers, ahead of student teams from Purdue University and the University of California San Diego.

Graduation is always a highlight of the spring at Houston Community College (HCC) and this year, more than 1,700 students graduated at HCC’s spring graduation at NRG Stadium. Based on outstanding accomplishments and dedication to student success, Houston Community College has been selected to participate in a Talent Strong Texas Pathways five-year statewide economic mobility grant. The $16 million grant – administered by the Texas Success Center – helps selected colleges increase the number of credentialed Texans preparing for high-demand careers with a living wage.

Yesterday, the Houston Community College Board of Trustees declined to extend my contract beyond August 31, 2023. We will therefore all be working to support the Board, the College, and most importantly the students in the upcoming transition to a new chancellor.

Houston Community College’s West Houston Institute and the Urban Manufacturing Alliance will bring national, state, regional and local economic and community development leaders to Houston from Nov. 1-3 to promote urban manufacturing programs, policies and models that can creating more resilient economies.

HCC will be authorized to offer training to instructors to deliver MSSC’s CPT 4.0 e-learning courseware, and its hands-on Certified Production Technician Plus (CPT+) program using the highly innovative “Skill Boss” training and testing device invented by Amatrol, the nation’s leading manufacturer of industrial technician training equipment.

The $3.3 million grant will go toward HCC Central’s efforts to prepare students to graduate from high school, enroll into a post-secondary program and complete their programs of study. Funding will be distributed over the next five years to offer pre-college support services to 131 students a year.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has donated $25,000 to support HCC’s Public Safety program and students. The donation was made before the HCC Board of Trustees at a meeting on May 19, 2022. Since 2017, the longtime area organization has awarded $200,000 to the HCC Public Safety Center of Excellence and an additional $20,000 in private scholarships to HCC students.

The HCC Katy campus Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program has moved from Katy to its new home at the HCC Spring Branch campus, just in time for the 2022 summer sessions. A manufacturing industry organization has donated $40,000 to Houston Community College to help students to succeed in skilled trade careers. The PVF Roundtable donation this month brings the organization’s total charitable contributions to the college to $150,000 since 2017 to fund scholarships for students to pursue jobs in manufacturing such as a welder, manual machinist, CNC machinist and industrial mechanic.

Houston Community College has won the 2022 Bellwether Award for its outstanding and innovative workforce development program: HCC’s Entrepreneurial Initiatives. The Bellwether Awards are widely regarded as one of the nation’s most competitive and prestigious recognitions for community colleges.

Earning an HCC diesel maintenance and repair certificate is a challenge that requires mechanical knowledge and the ability to master technologies used in the much-in-demand field. HCC student Leon Hosea is working hard to achieve that goal. But mastering the curriculum and showing his skills aren’t the only hurdles he must clear. Hosea lost his vision in 2014, which meant suspending his career as an aviation mechanic.

After two years of academic grind, Denzel Wilson is counting the days to a milestone in his quest for a tech career. In May, he will walk the stage for a degree in artificial intelligence. Wilson, 25, will be among the initial AI graduates from Houston Community College, the first community college in Texas to launch an AI Associate of Applied Science degree program in summer 2020.
