HCC student, Army veteran finds calling in Sonography
Apr 14, 2026

Before stepping into a Houston City College classroom, Gia Jones served her nation in the U.S. Army as a logistics specialist stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. When she returned to civilian life, she took the opportunity to pursue a healthcare career using her GI Bill. She chose to become a sonographer, and she chose HCC to help her achieve her goal.
“I wanted a career where I can make a direct impact. Sonography allows me to use technical skills while also thinking critically and helping patients in real time,” Jones said. “I enrolled at HCC because of the strong reputation for healthcare programs and the hands-on clinical training.”
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program demands long hours of study, technical precision, and the ability to perform under pressure in actual clinical settings, but Jones’ Army experience helped shape the discipline and resilience she leans on as she navigates those challenges.
She also continues to serve others in a student leadership capacity.
Jones serves as president of the HCC United Student Council, vice president of the Student Government Association at HCC Coleman College for Health Sciences, and a cabinet member and treasurer for her sonography cohort.
She is also a recipient of the Cindy Fraser Memorial Endowed Scholarship from the HCC Foundation—a recognition that reflects both her academic performance and her commitment to the college community.
Jones, part of the Class of 2026 cohort, is excited about her upcoming graduation in May. She recently completed her clinical training at the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic in the Texas Medical Center and feels well equipped to enter the workforce.
“The experience significantly strengthened my scanning skills and helped prepare me to become a confident and compassionate sonographer,” she said. “Being able to apply what I learned in class in a real clinical environment was wonderful.”
Even with the demands of college, Jones still finds time to pursue painting, horseback riding and other moments of calm. She is also expecting a daughter, and Jones and her husband, Michael Green, are actively preparing for the baby’s arrival.
As her graduation approaches, Jones is focused on finishing strong at HCC and moving forward to pursue a bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration at Texas Southern University.
“I’m excited to continue building my education in a way that supports both my clinical background and my long-term leadership goals in healthcare,” she said.
