About the Program

The Heavy Vehicle, Diesel, and Industrial Technology provides skilled and knowledgeable entry-level employees to heavy equipment industries all over Texas. The program provides hands-on training in diesel engine repair and preventative maintenance for commercial trucks, heavy and industrial equipment, buses, work trucks and passenger vehicles.

STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

    Demonstrate competency in Heavy Vehicle brake and suspension service procedures. Demonstrate competency in Heavy Vehicle transmission service and related systems.

Program Information

General Requirements

The Heavy Vehicle, Diesel and Industrial Technology Program provides skilled and knowledgeable entry-level employees to the heavy-duty commercial trucking and the heavy equipment industries through out Texas. Employers actively seek Houston City College’s Heavy Vehicle, Diesel & Industrial Technology graduates to work as diesel engine or maintenance specialists and field technicians.

Specialized classroom and practical lab work experiences are used to prepare students for a long career in the Heavy Vehicle, Diesel & Industrial Technology industry. Since this program is designed to prepare graduates for a career in the heavy-duty truck and diesel equipment industry, personal protective equipment (PPE) and tools are expected to be purchased by students in order to perform routine class and laboratory assignments.

Students receiving their Level 1 Certificates or an AAS degree can look forward to a variety of employment opportunities in the heavy-duty truck and diesel equipment industry as repair technicians, service advisors, service managers, shop foreman, and/or business owners. All instructors are certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), 1010 Blue Seal Drive, SE, Suite 101, Leesburg, VA 20175, ase.com

In addition, please note that a student may only earn one Occupational Skills Award (OSA) per academic year. 

TSI testing is required prior to first enrollment for all AAS degrees and Level II certificates.

There are 6,109 Bus and Truck Mechanics and Diesel Engine Specialists employed in the Greater Houston Area. This number is expected to increase by 6.9% over the next four years.

The estimated annual job openings is 263 jobs a year.
