This Academic Advising Syllabus is intended to guide advising interactions and serve as a roadmap throughout your enrollment with Houston Community College.

Academic Advising is an intentional, collaborative, and ongoing partnership between the advisor and the student. More importantly, this partnership involves proactive participation between the advisor and the student. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with their assigned Academic Advisor at least once per year. Our goal in Advising is to assist you with completing your academic, career, and personal goals. Academic Advising Mission Statement

Academic Advising at Houston Community College (HCC) provides a holistic student-centered experience inspiring students towards academic achievement and empowering students to develop educational and career pathways through collaborative relationships with advisors, faculty, and staff.

As a result of connecting with an Academic Advisor, students will:

  • Become familiar with college deadlines, add/drop dates, and academic requirements.
  • Identify, research, and prepare for their academic and career goals.
  • Utilize technology to access your “My Eagle” account to understand, review and track their degree plan.
  • Be familiar with campus resources to assist with academic achievement.
  • yellow-checkEmbrace personal responsibility as an integral part of personal and student success.
  • Know the importance of program completion, core completion, and the benefits of the associate degree, transfer, and reverse transfer options.
  • Schedule regular appointments with your assigned Academic Advisor.
  • Arrive or log in on time to each in-person or virtual advising session prepared with materials, and/or questions.
  • Actively participate in advising sessions and ask questions if you do not understand a policy or procedure.
  • Explore, develop, and clarify your educational, career, and personal goals through collaboration with an academic advisor.
  • Maintain notes on what was discussed in your advising session (requirements, deadlines, actions, and steps to complete).
  • Create and commit to an academic plan that supports certificate and/or degree completion and/or successful transfer.
  • Read your official HCC email and/or preferred email weekly for official communications from your advisor and respond in a timely manner.
  • Utilize advising tools such as Career Hub, college websites, and the college catalog to gather information as it relates to your career interest.
  • Meet critical deadlines for registration, financial aid, and payment deadlines, add/drops, and application for completing your degree and/or certificate.
  • Commit to completion.
  • Assist and accurately communicate program and degree requirements, deadlines, policies, and procedures.
  • Teach advisees how to navigate, understand, and utilize important degree planning tools.
  • Make appropriate referrals to internal and external resources and student support services.
  • Keep accurate notes of all advising sessions, including interactions and discussions related to academic and career goals.
  • Respond to advisees via telephone, email, and in-person in a timely manner. The standard response time is within two business days
  • During busy advising and registration cycles, the response time should not exceed 4-5 business days.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA, and adhere to professionalism at all times.
  • Ask appropriate questions, and listen attentively and respectfully. Be available, understanding, and approachable, and demonstrate an interest in the student.
  • Monitor academic progress and assist with developing action plans for students who encounter academic difficulty.

Friendly Reminders

  • When sending an email or leaving a voicemail, be sure to include your name, student ID#, and phone number with area code. Please be mindful of background noises or distractions and speak slowly and clearly.
  • Register for the upcoming semester as early as possible. Review the academic calendar for important dates and deadlines.
  • Please review the list of FAQs found on the advising webpage.
  • Prepare a list of questions to discuss at your advising meeting.

Individual Advising 

  •  Understand how to navigate the MyEagle portal.
  • Identify your intended educational and career pathway choice.
  • Understand the transfer requirements for the transfer institution you selected.
  • Understand the importance of Core Curriculum and degree completion.
  • Maintain consistent contact with your Academic Advisor.
  • Be familiar with important policies (residency requirements, 6 drop, and 3 peat).
  • Understand college resources.
  • Understand and know the academic registration calendar.

16-30 Hours

Individual Advising
  • Maintain consistent contact with your Academic Advisor.
  • Commit to a plan of study within a pathway and a transfer.
  • Review your EaglePlan with your Academic Advisor and make necessary updates.
  • Understand your academic standing, and how it can affect your transfer and degree plans.
  • Explore scholarship and internship opportunities.

Second Year 31+ Hours


31-45 Hours

Individual Advising
  • Maintain consistent contact with your Academic Advisor.
  • Monitor academic progress and plan for graduation and/or transfer.
  • Review your EaglePlan in preparation for completion.
  • Utilize college resources for career and job readiness services.
  • Know the admissions process and deadlines for your transfer institution.

 45+ Hours 

Individual Advising 
  • Maintain consistent contact with your Academic Advisor.
  • Complete degree audit and submit a graduation application when you have 14 or fewer credit hours remaining in your program.
  • Meet with Career Services to create a resume.
  • Request transcripts to be sent to the transfer institution.
  • Be familiar with transfer information regarding financial aid assistance.
